JAPAN WEDDING & ELOPEMENT QUESTIONS
A few things you may be wondering.
You don’t need a venue shortlist, a finished vision or every answer before getting in touch. But you probably have a few questions. Here are the ones couples ask us most often, from when to book to who’ll be looking after your people.
Your wedding in Japan
Do we need to know where in Japan we want to marry?
Not at all. Tell us what draws you here. The food, the architecture, a place you’ve returned to for years, or somewhere you’ve only imagined. We’re interested in how you like to travel and what you’d love to share with the people coming with you.
Finding the place is part of our planning work. Once planning begins, we explore locations and venues that suit your ideas, your guest numbers and your budget. You don’t need to solve that part before meeting us.
What is an elopement at 37 Frames?
An elopement is for the two of you.
A micro wedding brings a small group of guests into the celebration. An intimate wedding is a smaller gathering with particular attention to the experience you share together.
Once guests are joining you, their welcome, meals, transport and comfort become part of the plans too. So we consider where you’re going and what you’ll do together, as well as how many people are coming.
Do you welcome international and LGBTQ+ couples?
Absolutely. We plan for couples, full stop.
Our work has always brought together people from different countries, cultures and family backgrounds. We want you to feel welcome, understood and entirely yourselves throughout this experience. Tell us about the two of you and the people you’re bringing. We’d love to know you.
Can we celebrate over several days?
Yes, and there’s a lot to love about giving everyone a little more time together. A welcome dinner, the wedding, a farewell gathering: each offers a different chance to spend time with people who may have traveled a very long way to be there.
We can plan the wedding day itself or a celebration across several days. Substantial additional events may require an additional planning scope and fee, which we discuss as the plans develop.
Does it have to be a weekend? And can we have a party?
It certainly doesn’t have to be a Saturday. We can consider the date as part of the wider trip: when your guests will arrive, how long you’ll stay and which venues suit your plans.
And yes to a party, provided we choose somewhere that can host the one you have in mind. Tell us early if a dance floor and a late finish matter. Music, sound restrictions and event hours need to be part of choosing the venue, rather than a conversation after it’s booked.
How do we choose the season?
Start with what you’d love to experience. A garden coming into flower, autumn color, a winter landscape, or dinner with the doors open to the evening.
We’ll talk through timing for the places you’re considering, alongside guest comfort, travel and how the celebration would work in different weather. The season should give you plenty to look forward to across the whole experience.
Can you guarantee cherry blossom or a view of Mt Fuji?
No one can, and anyone who does is guessing. Blossom isn’t a date, and Fuji isn’t an appointment.
We use our experience here to guide the timing and choose the setting, but we can’t promise the natural world will follow the schedule. What we can do is plan a celebration with plenty to love whatever the view that morning.
We want you to enjoy the version of Japan you receive, with a place and a plan you’re happy to be part of.
Your ceremony
Can we bring traditions from more than one culture?
Absolutely. Our wedding work has taken us to close to 30 countries, and being welcomed into the ways other people celebrate has shaped how we work.
We’ll want to understand what a tradition means to you, who will take part and how you’d like your guests to experience it. Then we work through how to include it thoughtfully, with respect for both your story and the setting you’ve chosen.
A wedding in Japan doesn’t mean leaving the rest of your story at home.
Can we have a Shinto wedding if we’re not Japanese?
Yes, at many shrines. The shrine sets the terms: its order of rites, its music, its guest numbers and its rules on cameras. The ceremony is in Japanese and led by the priests, and a shrine will expect you to understand what you’re taking part in.
We’ll help you understand what taking part involves and discuss the practical arrangements, including language, guests and photography. The setting may be what first draws you in. Understanding the ceremony helps you decide whether it’s right for you.
Can a friend or family member lead our ceremony?
Yes. For a symbolic ceremony, someone who knows you well can be a wonderful choice. We can work with them on the structure, timing and practical details, so they can concentrate on the part only they can bring.
You might prefer a celebrant, a friend or a ceremony centered on your own vows. Legal marriage registration is a separate arrangement; choosing someone to lead the celebration doesn’t complete that paperwork.
Does our ceremony make us legally married?
The ceremony and the legal registration are separate.
Many of our couples complete the legal arrangements at home and come to Japan for their celebration. Registering a marriage in Japan may also be possible, depending on your circumstances. The documents, eligibility and recognition requirements should be confirmed with the relevant municipal office and your embassy or consulate.
Let us know what you’re considering so we understand which arrangements form part of your plans.
Planning together
When should we inquire?
You can book us and reserve your date with our team up to 18 months ahead, subject to availability. Wedding planning begins around a year before the celebration. You don’t need to wait until planning starts to secure your place in our calendar.
Tell us your preferred date or season, the year and any flexibility when you inquire.
For elopements, around a year before is a good time to get in touch.
What happens after we inquire?
For inquiries about booking our team, we review your plans and share the relevant Collections and Wedding Planning guides. These give you a fuller picture of our work, services and fees.
Once you’ve had a chance to read them, and our availability and approach suit what you’re looking for, we’ll invite you to a complimentary one-hour Zoom. There’s time for your questions, our questions and a proper conversation about what you’re imagining.
When we’re ready to take the next step together, we prepare your tailored proposal.
Can we plan everything without visiting Japan first?
Yes. You can plan with us from overseas without making a separate trip before the wedding.
You’ll work with us in English, while our team handles the Japanese-language conversations with venues and the people bringing your celebration together. Our Japanese colleagues bring their own local knowledge, relationships and understanding to that work. We explain the options and decisions clearly, so you know what you’re choosing and why.
Japan has been our adopted home for more than 20 years. You don’t need to learn how everything works here before we begin.
What does full planning include?
We work with you from finding the place through to looking after the celebration itself. That includes venue and supplier sourcing, design and art direction, budget guidance, timelines, production, wedding-related logistics and guest coordination.
We consider how it all works together: the ceremony, the meal, the photographs, the journey between places and the experience of the people you’ve invited.
Your proposal sets out exactly what’s included and who is responsible for what. Venue and supplier costs are separate from our professional planning fee.
Do you offer partial planning or wedding-day coordination?
For new clients, we offer full planning only.
We do our best work when we’re involved early enough to understand the decisions, develop the ideas and take responsibility for how everything comes together. For that reason, we don’t offer partial planning or a standalone service to coordinate plans made elsewhere.
What if we’ve already booked a venue or some suppliers?
That may still work. Booking a venue or one or two suppliers doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve moved beyond full planning.
Tell us what’s already arranged and share the relevant agreements. We’ll look at what remains to be developed and whether we can take on the planning in a way that works for everyone.
If most decisions are already made and you mainly need someone to coordinate the day, that falls outside the service we offer.
Will you consider a venue you haven’t worked at before?
Yes. During planning, we investigate promising new places and visit unfamiliar properties before asking you to commit. We look beyond the photographs: access, hospitality, permissions, weather arrangements and whether the venue can genuinely host the celebration you have in mind.
For venue sourcing outside Tokyo, one site visit is included. Further visits are charged at the associated travel and accommodation cost, without an additional planning or consulting fee for those visits. A venue we’ve already inspected doesn’t attract an extra sourcing charge simply because it’s outside Tokyo.
Venue research and visits form part of our booked planning service.
Budgets, guests and our creative team
How do your fees work?
For weddings with guests, our planning fee, photography and the wider celebration costs are set out separately. Every wedding we plan is photographed by 37 Frames.
Elopements start from ¥1M, including planning, 37 Frames photography and most location permits. Accommodation, transport, dining and other chosen elements are additional.
Film and wedding content creation are optional additions. Everything is individually planned, and we explain the services, inclusions and costs in Japanese yen.
Can you get venue quotations before we book?
We’ll explain our own services and fees before you book. Researching venues and obtaining tailored quotations is part of the planning work you engage us to do.
That work begins once you’re booked with us and your planning period is underway. We use your guest numbers, priorities and agreed budget to approach venues that make sense for your celebration.
Share an approximate overall budget when you inquire. It helps us understand whether your plans, including our planning and photography, can sit comfortably within what you have in mind.
We don’t provide standalone venue quotations or bespoke wedding costings before booking.
Do you help look after our guests?
Yes. Looking after your people is an important part of looking after you.
Our agreed wedding arrangements can include accommodation and rooming coordination, transfers, schedules and practical information, so guests understand where they need to be and how to get there. We also discuss children, accessibility and individual needs with you and the relevant teams.
Personal travel and sightseeing beyond the wedding program are separate. For that part of the journey, we can introduce you to Awayuki.
Can you accommodate dietary requirements?
Yes, with notice and the right conversations. Japanese cooking hides its ingredients well: dashi, the stock under so much of it, is often made with fish, and soy sauce usually contains wheat. We discuss requirements with the kitchens involved and confirm what is possible before making promises.
Please tell us early about allergies, coeliac disease, vegetarian or vegan guests, religious dietary requirements and any other needs. These can influence which venue is right for your celebration, so they belong in the conversation before menus are chosen.
We’ll ask about ingredients and preparation, including cross-contact concerns where relevant, and make any limitations clear. The aim is for your guests to feel thoughtfully considered, with arrangements they understand.
Can we bring our own photographer or filmmaker?
Our full planning service works with the 37 Frames Creative Team, rather than alongside outside photography or film teams.
Planning and photography begin together. Our photographers understand the people, the plans and the decisions behind the celebration before the wedding day arrives. That shared understanding is central to how we work.
Photography is part of every wedding we plan. Film is optional, with coverage, team arrangements and deliverables confirmed in your proposal.
Do you offer wedding content creation?
Yes, as an optional addition.
Short vertical videos and edited reels offer another way to revisit and share the day alongside your photographs and any commissioned film. We’ll discuss the kind of coverage you’d enjoy and confirm the collection, deliverables and delivery timing in your proposal.
Still have a question?
Perhaps yours is about a particular place, a family tradition or an idea you’re not quite sure how to describe yet. Include it in your inquiry, along with a little about the two of you.
We’d love to hear what you’re imagining.
